United Way to Host Annual Day of Action to Benefit Community

Looking for volunteers to help nonprofits in their areas of need.

Susquehanna Valley United Way (SVUW) will host their annual Day of Action on Friday, April 26th, and are seeking volunteers! This regional event happens across Montour, Columbia, Snyder, Union, and Northumberland Counties and provides residents the opportunity to make a difference in their community.

At United Way, community collaboration is at the forefront of our work,” said Christine Orlando, Director of Community Impact at SVUW. “The Day of Action is such a special day, and a wonderful example of how community members and organizations can come together to make an immediate and visible impact in our community.”

United Way is coordinating with their funded partners and other local nonprofits to see where they need support. So far, 18 different nonprofits have responded from Bloomsburg, Danville, Lewisburg, Middleburg, Mount Carmel, Northumberland, Selinsgrove, Shamokin, and Watsontown. The projects range from planting and weeding gardens, sanding, staining, and painting projects, building planter boxes, organizing storage units, and even helping Veterans work with horses!

Last year, over 250 volunteers committed nearly 40,000 hours to 26 different nonprofits. The hope is there will be an even greater impact this year!

"There are so many ways to get involved at United Way beyond giving and volunteering is one of them," said Adrienne Mael, President and CEO at SVUW. “We love bringing together our local community and all of our fantastic Funded and Community Partners. It’s a great way to showcase all the amazing work done by these dedicated non-profits every day.”

Anyone interested in joining United Way’s Day of Action can sign-up at svuw.org/dayofaction. You can register as an individual or as a group. Simply select your areas of interest, and United Way will match you to a project site. Registration is also open to any employers wishing to offer their employees team building or community service projects.

Janelle was a volunteer from the Bowen Agency at last year’s Day of Action and had this to say about the event.

“It was well organized, and we enjoyed a day out of the office being able to work together to give back to our communities where we work and live.”

Children under 14 years of age are also welcome to participate but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Every volunteer who participates will receive a commemorative t-shirt along with a goodie bag full of snacks, water, and some safety gear.

“Our group [of volunteers] were from Mifflinburg Bank and Trust,” said Jeff Johnstonbaugh, Librarian and Director of Priestley-Forsyth Memorial Library, a project site for last year’s Day of Action. “They were so energetic and raring to go. We will never be able to tell them how much we appreciated all the hard work they did for us.”

If you are a nonprofit in need of volunteers, there is still time to register your project at svuw.org/dayofaction. The deadline for both volunteers and nonprofits to register is Friday, March 15th, 2024.

United Way’s Day of Action is made possible through the generous support of Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, McCann School of Business, UPMC, and The Law Offices of Diehl, Dluge, Michetti & Michetti. Weis Markets, Pepsi Co, Middleswarth Potato Chips, Columbia-Montour Area Vo-Tech School, and ServePro allow United Way to provide each volunteer with water, snacks, and safety gear through in-kind donations.
